Aurora is the second largest city in Illinois, with a population of 171,782 and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city refers to itself as “The City of Lights” because it was one of the first cities in the United States to implement an all-electric street lighting system in 1881. Aurora officially adopted the nickname in 1908.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.42 sq mi (102.1 km2), of which, 38.53 sq mi (99.8 km2) is land and 0.89 sq mi (2.3 km2) or 2.26% is water.
