Hayward is a city located in the East Bay in Alameda County. Hayward is the sixth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the Bay’s eastern shore, sandwiched between San Lorenzo and Union City, at the eastern terminus of the San Mateo Bridge. Hayward was originally known as “Hayward’s,” then as “Haywood,” later as “Haywards,” and eventually as “Hayward.” There is some disagreement as to how it was named. Some say it was named for Alvinza Hayward, a millionaire from the California Gold Rush.
